Student-Athlete Leadership Program

Group of athletes, private school

The Student-Athlete Leadership Program within Berkeley Athletics is run by Richie Warren, who teaches Upper Division P.E. and is Head Coach of the Varsity Baseball Team. During the fall, winter, and spring sports seasons, juniors and seniors on varsity teams are selected by their coaches to become team captains and are automatically enrolled in this outstanding enrichment opportunity. Each group of students attends a Saturday seminar, as well as several lunch meetings throughout the season to troubleshoot any challenges they may be facing and gain valuable insights from others who are in similar positions.

The Student-Athlete Leadership Program is designed to equip Berkeley student-athletes with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their roles as sports team leaders. Through a combination of theoretical concepts, practical exercises, and real-world scenarios, student-athlete captains will focus on leadership development, communication, team building, and decision-making abilities. The program will aim to develop confident, resilient, and empathetic student-athlete leaders who can motivate their teammates, foster a positive team culture, and inspire peak performance.

“We are very excited to roll out this growth opportunity for our student-athletes. This program has been developed so that they will learn important tools and techniques, as well as have peer experiences that will enhance their ability to not only help lead their teams, but also lead in all their activities, both on and off campus,” says Melaney (Amos) O’Carroll ’84, Athletic Director.
